Japanese Grammar: A は B です(A is B)
The basic Japanese sentence structure using 「A は B です」 (A wa B desu), which works like “A is B.”

 

🔹 Basic Structure

A は B です。
(A wa B desu.)
= A is B.

は (wa) → topic marker (introduces what you’re talking about).
です (desu) → polite ending, like “is/are.”

🔹 Examples
1. これ わたしの です
(kore wa watashi no desu.)
= This is mine.

これ (kore) → this
わたしの (watashi no) → mine

2. これ おもしろい です
(kore wa omoshiroi desu.)
= This is interesting / fun / funny.

これ (kore) → this
おもしろい (omoshiroi) → interesting/fun/funny

3. これほんです
(kore wa hon desu.)
= This is a book.

4. それりんごです
(sore wa ringo desu.)
= That is an apple.

5. あれやまです
(are wa yama desu.)
= That (over there) is a mountain.

6. これおいしいです
(kore wa oishii desu.)
= This is delicious.

7. それむずかしいです
(sore wa muzukashii desu.)
= That is difficult.

✅ So the formula is:
Topic (A) + は + Description/Ownership (B) + です
