Japanese Communication for Restaurant Workers
For those who have recently arrived in Japan and are currently working or planning to work part-time (baito) at restaurants, eateries, or izakaya (Japanese pubs).
I. Greeting Customers
1. いらっしゃいませ。
Irasshaimase.
Welcome!
2. 何名様ですか？
（なんめいさまですか）
Nanmeisama desu ka?
How many in your party?
3. ご予約はございますか？
（ごよやくはございますか）
Goyoyaku wa gozaimasu ka?
Do you have a reservation?
4. こちらへどうぞ。
Kochira e dōzo.
This way, please.
5. こちらのお席へどうぞ。
（こちらのおせきへどうぞ）
Kochira no oseki e dōzo.
Please take this seat.
6. カウンター席とテーブル席、どちらがよろしいですか？
（カウンターせきとテーブルせき、どちらがよろしいですか）
Kauntā seki to tēburu seki, dochira ga yoroshii desu ka?
Would you prefer a counter seat or a table?
7. ただいま満席です。
（ただいままんせきです）
Tadaima manseki desu.
We are fully booked at the moment.
8. 順番にご案内しておりますので、少々お待ちください。
（じゅんばんにごあんないしておりますので、しょうしょうおまちください）
Junban ni goannai shite orimasu node, shōshō omachi kudasai.
We are seating guests in order, so please wait a moment.
9. お待たせいたしました。こちらへどうぞ。
（おまたせいたしました。こちらへどうぞ）
Omatase itashimashita. Kochira e dōzo.
Sorry to have kept you waiting. This way, please.
II. Taking Orders
1. ご注文はお決まりですか？
（ごちゅうもんはおきまりですか）
Gochūmon wa okimari desu ka?
Are you ready to order?
2. お飲み物からお伺いしてもよろしいですか？
（おのみものからおうかがいしてもよろしいですか）
Onomimono kara oukagai shite mo yoroshii desu ka?
May I take your drink order first?
3. お飲み物は何になさいますか？
（おのみものはなになさいますか）
Onomimono wa nani ni nasaimasu ka?
What would you like to drink?
4. ご注文をお伺いします。
（ごちゅうもんをおうかがいします）
Gochūmon o oukagai shimasu.
I’ll take your order.
5. 〇〇を一つ、△△を二つでよろしいですか？
（〇〇をひとつ、△△をふたつでよろしいですか）
〇〇 o hitotsu, △△ o futatsu de yoroshii desu ka?
One ○○ and two △△, correct?
6. ご注文を繰り返します。
（ごちゅうもんをくりかえします）
Gochūmon o kurikaeshimasu.
Let me repeat your order.
7. ご注文は以上でよろしいですか？
（ごちゅうもんはいじょうでよろしいですか）
Gochūmon wa ijō de yoroshii desu ka?
Is that everything for your order?
8. 申し訳ございません。こちらは品切れです。
（もうしわけございません。こちらはしなぎれです）
Mōshiwake gozaimasen. Kochira wa shinagire desu.
I’m very sorry. This item is sold out.
9. 少々お待ちください。確認してまいります。
（しょうしょうおまちください。かくにんしてまいります）
Shōshō omachi kudasai. Kakunin shite mairimasu.
Please wait a moment. I will go and check.
10. 追加のご注文はございますか？
（ついかのごちゅうもんはございますか）
Tsuika no gochūmon wa gozaimasu ka?
Would you like to order anything else?
11. こちらがおすすめです。
Kochira ga osusume desu.
This is our recommendation.
III. Serving at the Table – 配膳（はいぜん）
1. お待たせいたしました。〇〇でございます。
（おまたせいたしました。〇〇でございます）
Omatase itashimashita. 〇〇 de gozaimasu.
Sorry to have kept you waiting. Here is your ○○.
2. 熱いので、お気をつけください。
（あついので、おきをつけください）
Atsui node, oki o tsukete kudasai.
It’s hot, so please be careful.
3. お皿をお下げしてもよろしいですか？
（おさらをおさげしてもよろしいですか）
Osara o osage shite mo yoroshii desu ka?
May I clear your plate?
4. 取り皿をお持ちします。
（とりざらをおもちします）
Torizara o omochi shimasu.
I’ll bring you small plates for sharing.
5. お箸をお持ちします。
（おはしをおもちします）
Ohashi o omochi shimasu.
I’ll bring you chopsticks.
6. お水のおかわりはいかがですか？
（おみずのおかわりはいかがですか）
Omizu no okawari wa ikaga desu ka?
Would you like a refill of water?
7. ほかに何かご入用ですか？
（ほかになにかごにゅうようですか）
Hoka ni nanika go-nyūyō desu ka?
Is there anything else you need?
8. すぐにお持ちします。
（すぐにおもちします）
Sugu ni omochi shimasu.
I’ll bring it right away.
9. 申し訳ございません。確認いたします。
（もうしわけございません。かくにんいたします）
Mōshiwake gozaimasen. Kakunin itashimasu.
I’m very sorry. I will check on that.
(Used when a customer reports a missing dish, an order that hasn’t arrived, or any problem that needs checking.)
10. 失礼いたします。
（しつれいいたします）
Shitsurei itashimasu.
Excuse me.
(Used when approaching the table, placing a dish, or leaving the customer’s table.)
IV. 12 Phrases to Memorize When You Start Work
1. いらっしゃいませ。
Irasshaimase.
Welcome!
2. 何名様ですか？
（なんめいさまですか）
Nanmeisama desu ka?
How many in your party?
3. こちらへどうぞ。
Kochira e dōzo.
This way, please.
4. 少々お待ちください。
（しょうしょうおまちください）
Shōshō omachi kudasai.
Please wait a moment.
