Minna No Nihongo Lesson 12 Grammar

Lesson 12 will guide us on how to divide the tenses of the adjective な and the adjective い. Later, we will learn about the comparative and superlative forms of adjectives.

1. Divide nouns and adjectives tails [な]

. Present, future Past
Positive です でした
negatives じゃ(では)ありません じゃ(では)ありませんでした

For adjectives ending [な], must removed [な]
For example :
Yesterday it rained.

せんしゅう わたしは ひま じゃ(では)ありませんでした。
I was not available last week.

2. Divide the time from the tail [い]

. Present, future Past
Positive あついです あつかった
negatives あつくない あつくなかった

Except in the present affirmative, when dividing, the adjectives [い] must be removed [い]
For example :
Yesterday was cold

The day before yesterday, the bread was not good.

3. Noun 1 は Noun 2 より + Adjective です
Meaning: A noun … more than a noun 2
Usage: Comparative, poor sentences. Nouns are compared to nouns 2
For example :
このかばんは そのかばんより きれいです。
This bag is more beautiful than the other.

くるまは バイク より はやいです。
Cars are faster than bicycles.

4. Adjective 1 と noun 2 と どちらが Adjective ですか
Meaning: Between noun 1 and noun two, which … more?
Usage: [どちら] is a word to use when comparing between two things or people
How to answer: noun 1 (noun 2) のほうう adjective です
For example :
にほんごとえいごと どちらが すきですか。
Japanese and English, which one do you prefer?

にほんごの ほうがすきです。
I prefer Japanese.

ほんと えいがと どちらが おもしろいですか。
Which books and movies are more interesting?

Both are interesting.

5. Noun 1 (のなか) で + なん/どこ/だれ/いつ + が いちばん Adjective ですか
Meaning: In the noun range 1, what / where / who / when … most?
Usage: The highest comparison question
How to answer: 2 が いちばん Adjective です
For example:
日本で どこが いちばん きれいですか。
In japan, where is the most beautiful?

東京 が いちばんきれいです。
Tokyo is the most beautiful place.
