ともなく (tomonaku)

Meaning: to do something without thinking about it; uncertainty; lack of intent

How to use the: Verb-dictionary form + ともなく/ともなしに

Example sentences:
1, どこからどもなく、沈丁花のいい香りが漂ってくる。
Doko karadomo naku, jinchōge no ī kaori ga tadayotte kuru.
It is not clear where from nowhere flies to the smell of fragrant flowers

2, ウェートレスは、聞くともなしに客の密談を聞いてしまった。
ueetoresu wa kiku tomonashi ni kyaku no mitsudan o kiite shimatta.
The waitress overheard the customers’ private conversation.

3, 二人はどちらからともなく走り寄り固く抱きあった。
Futari wa dochira kara tomonaku hashiri-yori kataku daki atta.
The two who were not clear who before who after whom, ran to hug each other.

4, 本を引っ張り出し、開くともなく開いた。
hon o hipparidashi, hiraku tomonaku hiraita.
He took out the book and opened it tentatively.

Attention:
ともなく is similar to ともなしに
