ことに (koto ni)

Meaning: emphasize speaker’s feelings; to my (surprise/etc)

How to use the:
Verb-casual + ことに
いadj + ことに
なadj + なことに

Explain:
Emphasis at the beginning of sentences used to describe affection, emotion

Example sentences:
1, 残念なことに、私がたずねた時には、その人はもう引っ越したあとだった。
Zan’nen’nakoto ni, watashi ga tazuneta tokiniha, sono hito wa mō hikkoshita atodatta.
What a pity, when I found the place then the man moved away

2, 驚いたことに、彼女はもうその話を知っていた。
Odoroita koto ni, kanojo wa mō sono hanashi o shitteita.
To my surprise, she already knew the story.

3, 嬉しいことに、今日は給料をもらっている。
Ureshī koto ni, kyō wa kyūryō o moratte iru.
It was fun, getting paid today

4, 不幸なことに、さらなる困難が我々を待ち受けていた。
fukou na koto ni, saranaru konnan ga wareware o machiukete ita.
Unfortunately there was more trouble ahead.

Attention:
Often used with words indicating affection or emotion
困ったことに：　It is so difficult
びっくりしたことに：　So surprise
あきれたことに：　It was shocking
面白いことに：　It was interesting
ありがたいことに：　So grateful
幸いことに：　So happy
