How do you ask “what is your name” in Japanese?

(anata no namae wa nandesu ka?)
What is your name?

Notes : this is the standard form taught in Japanese textbook and if a Japanese can notice that you are a foreigner then they will understand, though it’s not practical, since Japanese avoid saying YOU (so, Japanese people usually don’t use this to ask someone’s name)

All phrases above can be used if you are asking the name to the listener face-to-face. If you are asking the name through phone (i.e. someone is making a phone call to your house / office), then they will have other phrases.

Polite
(donata sama desu ka)
Who are you?

dochira sama desu ka
Who is this?

donata desu ka
Who are you?

Normal
anata ha dare desu ka?
Who are you?

These are more acceptable for Japanese.

(onamae wo, oshiêtê kuremasenka?)
Do you mind tell the name (your name)?

(onamaê wo, oshiêtê kudasai.)
Please tell me the name (your name).

This is commonly used when a person is calling to someone’s house.

(onamaê wo okikase itadakêmasu deshouka?)
Would you allow me to know what your name is?

Notes :This is an expression with a high degree of politeness level, a standard level used in Japanese offices.
